As my last project for Apollo, forever, I wanted to do something that I have never done before and I knew I wanted to do something that was fun! After thinking for a whole, I thought of the idea of turning my favorite things into a resort and amusement park. I love going to amusment parks, they are my one of my favorite places to go to. Every summer, I go to Cedar Point and that is my favorite amusment park! I decided I wanted to create a resort and amusment park for Christmas.
Thinking Skill:
Synthesis
Our fourth thinking skill is synthesis. To synthesize something is to take a combination of ideas and make it into something new. Using my favorite things to create something new was a perfect way to synthesis. I brainstormed my favorite things and chose three of them: Christmas, my favorite roller coasters at Cedar Point, and my two favorite resorts and amusment parks. By synthesizing my favorite things, I was able to create a new resort and amusement park based on the things I like.
English
The Brochure And Website
For English, I wanted to create something that I could give information about my resort and amusment park, as well for advertisment. My first step in research to was look at different park maps, brochures, and websites. My go-to was Cedar Point and Disney World. These two are my top favorite Resorts and Amusement/Theme Parks that I have ever been to. My first trip to Disney was in 2014, and I will be going again in September of this year, 2020! I am super excited! And as for Cedar Point, I go every summer. I have so much fun going and I always create so many memories with my family! I want people to do the same when they visit mine.
After researching and taking notes on the different things about brochures, maps, and wesbites, I was almost ready to start doing my own. As well, I took notes on what needs to be on a brochure and color schemes. I then had to take a break from creating the brochure and website to work on the rides and map. In order to add details to the brochure, the map and rides must be created. (Read in the portfolio section to learn more about the creating process.) After it was created, I went back to finishing the brochure. I also had think of all the information that I would need.
I started with the name, as it would help me with my planning. I drafted different idea names and I deicded on Christmas Getaway. The meaning of the name was to refer as a vacation for Christmas, something for you and your family to enjoy away from reality. After I got the name, I began to work on contact names and infortmation, adresses, hours they would be open, and what I would like to have at the resort. I drafted name ideas for resturants, activties, rides, and character meetings.
I had made 2 different brochures, one of the resort and one for the park. I wanted two so it seperated the two attractions. Both had different activities and hours. I began with the front cover for both, wanting it to be very similar to each other. The name was in a big white font with a picture under it. Under the picture was contact information. As well, the back page of the brochure I wanted it to be the same. It was a calender from Novemeber to January, showing the days they are open, closed, opening early, and movie nights. For more information, it refered to the lobby or the website.
The next fold was a brief overview of either the park or resort. It listed some activites and events and what their was to offere. And for the last big page, it showed a map with labels and information about each building and ride. I tried to make the brochure as easy to read as possible with information that you would need on the go.
The next part of the product was to create Christmas Getaways Website. I made sure to have enough tabs that would provide information to guest the visit the website. The opening page of the website was a brief overview and had links to visit the other important information. Their are seperate pages for the parks attractions, which provides park hours, discriptions of the rides, character meetings, and the prices for tickets. Another page was dedicate to the resort which had similar information, what the resort offeres to do with hours, what types of rooms and themes, prices, and rates with deals. And lastly, their was a page where the guest can view the North Pole Zoo and meet our animals. They can learn their names and some information about them.

Art:
Creating The Maps
Fort Art, I wanted to create a map of the park and resort, but I wasn't sure how. I had a lot of ideas that I wanted to try, which made me get a late start on creating the brochures and website. Before I could begin creating the maps, I needed to do my research on amusment parks and reosrts. I made lists of pros and cons on where I would like to have my location. I wanted a realastic place, somewhere that the weather is not too cold but not too hot, and wouldn't have my park closed down for the large amounts of snow fall. As well, I had to take a look at the cities / state populations and how much toursit attraction it gets. I needed to have a place where not many people go, but a place where it was close to a well known area.
After researching about these things, I picked a small city in North Carolina. The weather was managable, the coasters would be able to be open for rides because it would be above 40. There were also other pros to this that made me pick North Carolina. Since securing the location, I decided it would be more benefical to look at properties, lands, and acres that were for sale to get an idea on what it would look like and how my map would be made. I then got to planning for my park.
The park was the first thing I needed to create, the main focus point of mine. I wanted my park to be perfect and to have all of my favorite Christmas things involved. I sat down for a few days watching Christmas movies and listening to Christmas songs to really put me in the mood and to sketch my ideas. Such as envisioning the rooms of what they would look like and ride ideas. I began to make descriptions of the rides of how I imagined the coasters, such as the speed and drops, how many loops, etc. I did not design until I had a complete list of rides.
My first attempt of making a map was to do a 3d model the lobby. I started to make the design and sketch on a software on my laptop. I was able to create how I would like the rooms to look like and what I wanted in the lobby. The only issue I ran into was that I could not build more than one on the same software, and I could not build more than one floor. Other than that, the software worked great but I was still not satisfied.
My second attempt, I decided to download a park app that would let me build my own theme park virtually. The first app I tried, it made me build the rides they told me too and place it where they wanted to. It was not a build your own. I tried a different park app, and again that did the same. I wanted to try Rollercoaster Tycoon because I knew I would be able to build how I wanted it too look like, but unfortunately it wasn't available on the MacBook.
My third attempt was too paint a map. I first tried to paint on a small cardboard piece of a map of the park. I only did a few rides before I changed my mind and scratched that idea. I did not like how it didn't look as realistic and how I wanted it to be. My fourth attempt was to use color pencil on a piece of paper, and again I ran into a similar issue like the paint. I just did not like how it looked.
My fifth attempt was the one I went with. I decided to use adobe draw to go for more of a 2d look. Adobe Draw is a software from Adobe that lets you draw on your iPad or iPhone. I first began to create my own coaster looks, but I wasn't happy on how I was creating them. I decided I wanted to use rides that were already made. For example. I used Steel Vengeance, a rollercoaster at Cedar Point, and recreated it to make Dashers Coaster. All I did was change the colors and style and made it into something new. For the most part, I used rides from Cedar Point and Disney World for inspiration. There was a few rides I made on my own for the park. I loved the turn out of it! After the parks map was made, I did the resort map on the same software.

Self In The Modern World:
Newspaper
For history, my main focus was on Disney World. I looked at the many aspects of Disney, such as: was gets people to go to Disney, reasons on why people need to go, princess affects on young girls, their prices, the stress of booking, and more. I viewed a lot of Disney Park Myths and Secrets and took notes, and found many intereresting things on Disney. After, Such as Disney had fake flags so they can fly them at any height. The flags have either missing stripes or stars, which makes them a fake flag. I than looked into the affects on young girls from Disney princess and found things I wouldn't have thought of. For example, researchers believed that Disney Princess had a negative affect on young girls, showing them how girls are raised and would have negative body image and more. It was proven wrong when a group of preschool girls got tested and showed the Disney Princess had a positive affect on them, which they had a positive and better body image and more.
I also wanted to take a look into why people liked going to Disney World more than once. It was a repetition of why people liked going, such as for the characters, the mickey shaped food, and the memories. For myself, I like going to Disney to meet the characters and ride some of my favorite rides. It makes that whole expeirnce full of memories. For example, when my family and I met Snow White, she said to my brother, "I'm looking for a new Grumpy, would you like to be him?" She said that because he was not having it and complained how much he wanted to leave. And as for the rides, my brother and I got my mom onto the Seven Dwarfts Mine Train, which my mom hates coasters, and made a special memory!
I knew I wanted to have my park be that magical. I want families to visit Christmas Getaway and create those memories. I made sure there was many opportunites for that, and special character meetings, rides, and activties. I enviosned myself at Christmas Getaway. If I had the chance to visit, my go-to character meeting would be the Grinch. I LOVE the Grinch! I would stay in a Grinch themed room and ride the Grinch themed rides.
I compared this to Disney. When I go to Disney, my favorite character to meet is Snow White. Snow White has been my favorite princess since I was a little girl and holds memories to me, such as being Snow White with aunt for Halloween. I knew the park needed to have special character meetings of peoples favorite characters. That would get the crowds!
I then began to look at prices for Disney and Cedar Point and matched it. I also planned a fake visit to get an estimate on a family of four. I wanted my park and resort to be affordable for all families. I made sure my tickets were affordable and for different ages. As well, I had two deals for tickets, and a normal cost. The two deals were after sunset and a 2 day pass to the park. Then, I created room pricings and room rates. The room rates were hotel and ticket prices. The room prices stay the same but the ticket prices get cheaper the more nights you stay. \I made sure to include some other deals to make sure people could afford it.
