Project 1
Thrifting With The 80s
I never did a project like this before, and I was super excited to do something different! This project allowed me to go out into the community to my local second-hand store and purchase clothing that was from the 80s to turn it into something we would wear in this generation. As well, I got to learn a lot about the 80s and second-hand stores.
Thinking Skill:
Contextualization
Our first thinking skill is contextualization. To contextualize is the form of taking something out of its original context and study about it. For English, I contextualized about blogs. I read other blogs and tips about how to write a blog. This helped me build knowledge on what I need to know for writing a blog. I was able to take what I learned and saw and write my own blogs. For art, I contextualized fashion from the 80s. I watched many movies and looked at some celebrities to get ideas of what the 80s was like. I then was able to create outfits that we would wear today from the 80s. Lastly, for history, I contextualized second-hand stores. I looked into the benefits of second-hand stores, how it helps the environment, etc. I than was able to link everything back together to reinforce the knowledge to inspire people to do the same.
English
The Blogs
Before I started, I had to first build my knowledge on blogs. I read and took notes on others blogs, as well I looked up tips and suggestions for writing blogs. This step was important to take my time to understand. I did have some knowledge for writing blogs. but not for professional blogs that I was aiming towards. The writing style of my blogs was communication, meaning I was trying to sound like I was talking to the reader in person. I used "I," "my," and exclamation points. Every other day, I would write a new blog for a total of 7. At the end of writing my blogs, I went back in to reread to catch any mistakes. I checked for grammar mistakes by proofreading and checking it through grammarly. As well, I had others give me feedback on the length of my blogs and If they were good.
I had a lot of fun writing the blogs. I tried to keep the blogs like a personal journal entry. This was also used for my tracker to show what I have did over the 3 weeks. The blogs incoporate my art which shows what I thrifted for and what I did. I felt this was the best way to write my blogs and to show what I was doing. Art:
Thrifting and Remaking
The art was my favorite to do for this project! Before I went thrift shopping for clothes of the 80s, I had to learn about the 80s. I took a lot of notes on the 80s fashion, and I was surprised to see how often fashion changed! Almost every year, something new came in and the fashion from the year before was out! As well, the trends that celebrities set was pretty amazing. But what is more amazing is what is coming back in todays generation.
This project allowed me to watch some 80s movies and shows, as well to look at celebrities, to see what fashion was in the 80s. I watched Heathers (1988) and Beetlejuice (1988) to see what some of the fashion was like then. And since I already watched Stranger Things, was filmed in todays generation but was set in the 80s, I also took notes of the fashion from that. Of course, the style inspirations of the 80s like Prince, Michael Jackson, and Madonna was noted of what they wore and how it influenced the fashion. I had a lot of fun seeing that, and seeing what is coming back in todays generation. I was not aware that some of these clothing came from the 80s that are in stores today.
By researching and learning about the 80s, I was then able to go to a thrift store and look around. I went twice over the three weeks to get some clothing to work with. I even found an 80s button down shirt with shoulder pads! The fun part came in when I got to redesign these clothing to how I pictured and imagined it to be. Self In The Modern World:
Thrifting and Reusing
When planning out my project, I knew I wanted to do something that will motivate people to shop at second-hand stores. Before researching, I did not know that second-hand stores had so many benefits for us and the environment. I learned a lot when researching about this. On my website, I made a page dedicated to thrifting and reusing. The page is very positive to hopefully change peoples mindsets on second-hand stores.
On the page, I talked about the many benefits that second-hand stores provide for us. As well, I had provided a lot of information on how we can save the environment and what textile waste is doing to our landfills. I was very surprised to see all this information, especially the crazy high numbers. To learn more, please visit my site to read everything I researched about. It is very beneficial and inspirational.
